Identifying genuine cloud software in logistics
Is every 'cloud software' truly cloud? Learn how to identify genuine cloud solutions in logistics and how to avoid misleading packages.
Is there actually 'fake cloud software'?
For example, in logistics.
Yes. Because not every software that says 'cloud software' on the label actually contains real cloud software!
Some vendors label their solution as a cloud application, even though technically it merely:
runs in a data center and in some cases still relies on classic virtualization solutions such as VMware and uses a so-called 'fat client'.
How can you identify genuine cloud software?
1) 100% web-based
- Genuine cloud applications run entirely in the browser, regardless of the end device or operating system.
2) No virtualization required on the customer side
- Neither VMware nor any other virtual machines are needed to use the software over the internet.
3) Subscription rather than license model
- A cloud solution is typically offered as a subscription.
- As required by law, this includes all maintenance, update, and operating costs for keeping the software running. (see tenancy law)
4) Immediately testable
- A genuine cloud solution can usually be tested directly by registering.
- No local installation. No IT project. No lead time.
Conclusion
If at least one of these criteria is not met, it is very likely not genuine cloud software, but rather 'old wine in new bottles.'
Especially when it comes to strategic IT decisions, it is worth taking a close look — technologically, economically, and with a long-term perspective.
