Skilled Labor Shortage in Logistics – with Sven Hermann
In a nutshell

Sven Hermann is founder and managing director of ProLog Innovation and professor of logistics and supply chain at the Northern Business School. As a guest on this podcast episode, he talks about the growing skilled labor shortage in logistics, the necessary transformation of leadership and culture – and why it now takes courage to change instead of blame and stagnation.

The skilled labor shortage is real – and it's here to stay

"We're not talking about a temporary shortage, but about a structural development." Sven Hermann describes how the logistics industry will come under severe pressure in the coming years – not because there's a lack of people willing to work, but because the working-age population is shrinking. Demographic change is reality – and it requires concrete, strategic responses.

New Work begins with attitude

Hermann calls for a rethinking in the industry. Instead of complaining about Generation Z, we need to understand what young people need today: purpose, responsibility, flexible work models. Many companies, in his observation, talk about "New Work" without actually working on their culture.

It's not just about home office or hybrid shifts, but about leadership that gives trust and allows mistakes. Only this way can an environment be created in which people enjoy working – and stay.

Logistics must reposition itself as an industry

Another central point: the logistics industry is often invisible in public perception – or linked to negative images. "We need to show that we are part of the solution," says Hermann. This can be achieved through new training formats, modern communication, and genuine visibility, for example through strong company profiles on social media or targeted educational partnerships.

Creating solutions – instead of assigning blame

Sven Hermann makes it clear: it's not about seeking blame – but recognizing room for action. Companies have the opportunity to become role models themselves, live modern leadership, and specifically develop further. "If we change our culture, we'll get through the skilled labor shortage better too."

This also means: less complaining, more action. Because those who see themselves as shapers not only win new talent – but also remain viable for the future in the long term.
